Hakomi ~ Mindful Inquiry ~Self Discovery ~Emotional HealingGentle, experiential and compassionate, Hakomi is a mindfulness based method of assisted self discovery and emotional healing. Embracing understanding from the worlds of neuroscience, spirituality and psychology, the Hakomi Method is based on the life long work and insight of Dr. Ron Kurtz (www.hakomi.com) Hakomi is the expression of the following principles: mindfulness, nonviolence, organicity, unity, body-mind-spirit holism, and loving presence.
The word Hakomi is Hopi in origin and translates as, "How do I stand in relation to these many realms?" or simply "Who am I?" Hakomi has been referred to as applied Buddhism. It employs the state of mind known as mindfulness for assisted self-study. This state of mind is used to explore our implicit beliefs, habits, and the automatic ways in which we perceive our world. With focus on present moment experience, as a bridge between the unconscious and conscious, we can begin to observe how we have organized our lives around these ways of being, how we relate to 'these many realms'. |
"Hakomi is a path taken by those who work to go beyond the half remembered hurts and failed beliefs that linger unexamined in the mind and body, hurts that act through barely conscious habits and reactions. This work is a part of that heroic labor, a cousin to sitting meditation, to singing bowls and chanting monks." --Ron Kurtz, Training Handbook (2010) |
There is an inner wakefulness that directs the dream,
and that will eventually startle us back
to the truth of who we are.
~Rumi
Hakomi is a therapeutic method but it is also more than just a therapy. As self-study, it is a natural part of the universal human endeavor to understand ourselves, to free ourselves from the inevitable suffering caused by the ignorance of who we are and how the world hangs together. ~Ron Kurtz |
Through Hakomi we can come to see how our beliefs create our reality, which in turn creates the automatic behavior that governs our world. Because many of these ways of being are habitual and run mostly outside of consciousness, Hakomi aspires to bring these ideas to light. By using little experiments, done in mindfulness, such beliefs are gently and efficiently brought into consciousness. From there they can be re-evaluated and adjusted, helping to minimize unnecessary suffering. From a standpoint of awareness, lasting change becomes possible.
Loving presence and the healing relationship are central to Hakomi. During a Hakomi session you will be received with sensitivity, empathy and a fine tuned responsiveness. This fosters a deep sense of safety and connection which contributes to the effectiveness of the therapy. A Hakomi practitioner will act as a compassionate assistant, there to nurture and support as you unfold into your own inner wisdom and come to a deeper recognition of yourself. Together we will journey on a pilgrimage toward your wholeness. What to expect from Hakomi therapy.... |
