Sunyata Calogeros-Smith RPC, SEP
Having long been drawn to the wisdom traditions of Buddhism and Taoism, I was naturally attracted to therapeutic methods that embodied Eastern spiritual principles. I found a natural fit in Hakomi along with Somatic Experiencing ® (SE). Both embrace mindfulness and non-violence as well as holding a deep respect for people's innate organic body wisdom, intelligence and ability to heal.
I am a Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC) with a focus on mindfulness-centered somatic psychotherapy. In 2009 I was granted certification as a Practitioner in the Hakomi Method by founder Dr. Ron Kurtz. I feel grateful for the opportunity to have studied and trained extensively with Ron Kurtz before his passing in 2011, along with the Vancouver chapter of the Hakomi Education Network. As well, I am a Somatic Experiencing ® (SE) Practitioner having completed a three year training with the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute. Specializing in trauma resolution and addiction recovery, I also hold a certificate in addiction counselling, as I recognize and appreciate the relationship between trauma and addiction. I am particularly interested in the neurobiological aspect of the interface between early disrupted attachment and developmental trauma and the development of addiction. To expand my understanding of developmental trauma, I studied 'Somatic Resilience and Regulation for Early Trauma' with Kathy Kain and Stephen Terrell. I live in Vancouver, BC, where I share my life with my husband and daughter.
